Driving Licence Application
Driving a car without a valid driver's licence is prohibited in Assam, as it is the rest of India. A driving licence is a legal document that allows a person to freely drive his or her car across the state of Assam. The obligation of providing driving licences in Assam falls to the Regional Transport Authority of Assam. The Assam RTO is also in charge of issuing international driving licences, duplicate driving licences, and other services relating to driving licences.
Types of Driving Licence in Assam
There are several types of driving licences that you can obtain in India. These include:
• A general driving licence.
• A licence for a motorcycle with gear.
• A licence for a motorcycle without gear.
• A licence for transport and commercial vehicles.
Assam's government issues the following driver's licences:

Learner's Licence
This is a temporary licence with a six-month validity period that is awarded to applicants who are learning to drive a motor vehicle. -
Permanent Licence
After receiving a learner's permit for one month (from the date of issuing), an applicant becomes eligible to apply for a permanent licence. -
Commercial Driving Licence
People who operate commercial vehicles must have a commercial driver's licence. It could be a passenger vehicle or a vehicle that transports commodities. The eligibility requirements for this type of licence differ from those for a permanent driver's licence.

International Driving Licence
An international driving permit is required for anyone who needs to drive a vehicle outside of India. This document is only good for a year. It must be reapplied for when it has expired.

Eligibility Criteria for Driving Licence in Assam
In Assam, as in the rest of the country, a driver's licence applicant must meet the following requirements:

To ride a motorcycle with a smaller engine than 50cc, you must be at least 16 years old.

To ride a motorcycle with a capacity greater than 50cc, you must be at least 18 years old.

To obtain a heavy transport vehicle driver's licence, you must be at least 20 years old.

All traffic rules and regulations should be known by the applicant.

Before applying for a permanent driver's licence, the applicant must have a learners driver's licence for at least 30 days but no more than 180 days.
